How Abbott Family Insurance Helps Small Businesses Offer Affordable Health Coverage
At Abbott Family Insurance, we’re passionate about helping small businesses, especially in the home services industry, find affordable health coverage options. Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Service Business Mastery for a podcast interview where I shared insights about how my agency is making health insurance more accessible for businesses with fewer than 50 employees. This blog post highlights key takeaways from that conversation and explains how we’re changing the game for small business owners.

From Military Life to Insurance
After serving in the Army for eight years, transitioning to civilian life wasn’t easy. As I explained, “I went from being an NCO in the United States Army to washing cars… My infantry credentials didn’t mean squat to nobody outside of the military world.” It was during this tough period that I discovered my passion for helping people through insurance.
I got my insurance license in 2010, at the start of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “It was a real mess back then… crashing websites, missed enrollments, and premiums not getting paid,” I said, recalling the chaotic early days of Obamacare. But I stuck with it, doing open enrollments part-time while still in the military. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to help small businesses offer affordable, high-quality health coverage to their employees.
The Health Insurance Struggles of Small Businesses
Many small business owners face challenges when offering health benefits, especially in service-based industries like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work. “I saw the problems with workers’ comp… guys getting hurt and not having $10,000 for a deductible to get the surgery they needed,” I explained. These employees would limp around for months, unable to get the care they needed because they couldn’t afford it.
This is where we come in. At Abbott Family Insurance, we help business owners solve this problem by offering a more cost-effective alternative: Individual Group Health Plans.
How Individual Group Health Plans Work
The heart of what we do is help businesses with fewer than 50 employees take advantage of ACA tax credits to drastically lower premiums. As I shared on the podcast, “I can save companies with 20 employees around $40,000 a year in premiums, and if they have a richer benefits package, it’s closer to $80,000.”
Here’s one example I gave: “A 35-year-old mom, 35-year-old dad, with two kids, making a household income of $100,000 in Florida can get full family coverage for about $427 a month.” These savings are life-changing for small business owners who want to offer great benefits but have been held back by the high cost of traditional group plans.
This model works especially well for service companies because the plans are income-rated, making health coverage more affordable for employees in various salary ranges. “For service managers making $100,000 to $120,000, they may not get great tax credits on their own, but when they have a family, they do,” I explained.
A New Way to Do Health Insurance
Our approach is unique. Most brokers don’t specialize in small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, but that’s exactly where we shine. “Once you’re over 50 employees, you’re just making a relational choice because the quotes will be the same,” I said. But for businesses with fewer than 50, we have a solution that’s different from traditional group insurance plans.
As I explained on the podcast, we’ve even created a method to ensure that employers can guarantee the premium is paid without the employee ever having to handle the money. This gives employers peace of mind that their employees are covered without the hassle of managing the payment process. “I can’t give away all my secrets, but I’ve got a way to make sure your employees have major medical coverage without them having to see that money,” I shared.
Empowering Employers to Do More
The best part about these cost savings? It allows business owners to invest more in their employees’ well-being. I gave an example on the podcast of a client in Texas who saved so much money on insurance that he was able to fully pay for his employees’ doulas during pregnancy. “With all the money I saved him this year, he’s paying for them all to have a doula in the delivery room,” I said. This kind of creative and compassionate use of savings is what truly empowers small businesses to stand out in a competitive job market.
